470-502 Lonsdale Street Melbourne

This rare pair of three storey terraces is one of a handful of original terraces remaining in the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD) and has had an interesting life.  It was originally designed by prominent architect Lloyd Tayler.  Shortly after its constuction in 1886 the terraces were converted into a private hospital known as Lonsdale House.  It was used for a brief time by the navy during World War I, served as a music academy, nurses hostel and again a hospital during World War II.   After the war it became the offices of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) before being absorbed into the construction of the County Court complex in the 1990s.  Read more... Albert Terrace: 204-218 Carrington Street, Adelaide. South Australia

Albert Terrace is one of the largest Victorian terraces ever built in Adelaide. The large graceful row of nine double storey terraced houses erected in 1880 is typical of the Adelaide style with its bluestone and cream render but features a high central Italianate parapet which breaks front more inkeeping with similar sized Melbourne terraces.  Read more... Another Kiwi terrace and again in Dunedin which is fortunately blessed with many buildings of this kind.

Gladstone terrace was built in 1880 and marches down an incline with blade party walls along the exposed corrugated iron roofline  much like Australian terraces in Sydney.  Its single storey verandahs however have been unsympathetically built in.  The row is given a modern look which significantly detracts from its appeal and I’m not certain as to its original verandah decoration if any and whether it featured iron lacework at any stage.    Read more... Granby Terrace: 11-15 Clifton Street, Richmond. Melbourne, Victoria

Granby is a row of three double storey terraces. The cartouche on the central parapet includes its name and date of construction – 1880.
