470-502 Lonsdale Street Melbourne

This rare pair of three storey terraces is one of a handful of original terraces remaining in the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD) and has had an interesting life.  It was originally designed by prominent architect Lloyd Tayler.  Shortly after its constuction in 1886 the terraces were converted into a private hospital known as Lonsdale House.  It was used for a brief time by the navy during World War I, served as a music academy, nurses hostel and again a hospital during World War II.   After the war it became the offices of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) before being absorbed into the construction of the County Court complex in the 1990s.  Read more... Traralgon: 212-216 Williams Road. Toorak. Melbourne, Victoria

Part of the 1890s Bush Inn Estate, this row of three brown bricked terraces is rich in Mannerist style high victorian decoration with the mid terrace featuring a high parapet comprised of triangular and round shell patterned pediments and patterned corbels.  The verandahs feature thick round and flat arched windows and leadlights rich in cast iron filigree with rounded corner brackets and central pendants as well as a richly detailed fence.  Even the blind arches have keystones for added effect.

Drummond Terrace. 93-105 Drummond Street. Carlton, Victoria

Drummond Terrace (built 1890-1891 to the design of Walter Scott Law) is the longest and largest three storey terrace row in Melbourne in one of Carlton’s most terraced wide streets.  The row of seven triple storey terraces features long rendered loggia of round arches and balustrades, notably deviating from the popular filligree style of the period. A central free classical pediment and blind porthole marks the mid terrace, while interesting false chimney motifs mark the mid point of each individual terrace in the row.  Read more... 308-312 Neill Street, Soldiers Hill. Ballarat, Victoria

This small row of three red brick Queen Anne style terraces is unusual for Ballarat. While the marching down the hill style is similar to many in Soldiers Hill, the cute terraces of this row are unusually tiny and thin for Ballarat terraces, like miner or workers cottages. The size could possibly explained by their proximity to the railway station and the typically small blocks of the surrounding subdivision in Soldiers Hill.  Read more...
