Terrace Houses: 42-44 McKillop Street, Geelong. Victoria

This pair of double storey semi-detached houses is notable for its combination of stunning brick polychrome and iron lacework.

The prominent party wall protruding from the slate tile roof and the tall polychrome chimneys dominate the roofline, along with the double bracketed eaves give it a picturesque quality.

The party walls feature French classical columns framing a verandah which has a concave corrugated iron roof cleverly concealed.  The iron lacework is fine with a delicate frieze on each level  below which are brackets and cast iron corinthian columns.  A cast iron palisade fence completes the lacework picture.  Zigzag polychrome brick patterns surround the windows with the upper storey featuring large French windows and the lower storey featuring expansive flat arched windows and impressive door complete with transom and sidelights .

Hillside is a terrace I’ve been fascinated with for many years.  Occupying a commanding position setback high atop Richmond Hill on busy Hoddle Street, this tall double storey row of three Italianate terrace houses has been without its double storey verandah for so long I wonder if anyone remembers what the original looked like.  Nevertheless, its architecture reveals many interesting and typically Melbourne features.

Set within a suburb with some fantastic examples of 1880s architecture is this unusual semi-detached pair of Victorian Italianate villas named Agincourt.   Each house is asymmetrical, but the pair combines to a unique create symmetry and among the notable features are the campanile-like towers and the restrained ornament used to best effect.

Ballarat Terrace: 227-231 Lydiard Street. Soldiers Hill, Victoria

Ballarat Terrace, built in 1889, is about as close to the Melbourne boom style of terrace that you can find outside of Melbourne. The terrace is fully restored and operates as a bed and breakfast.

It was designed for publican Hugh Raverty by local architect firm James and Piper.1

Former Lonsdale House: 470-502 Lonsdale Street. Melbourne, Victoria

Former Lonsdale House: 470-502 Lonsdale Street Melbourne

This rare pair of three storey terraces is one of a handful of original terraces remaining in the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD) and has had an interesting life.  It was originally designed by prominent architect Lloyd Tayler.  Shortly after its constuction in 1886 the terraces were converted into a private hospital known as Lonsdale House.  It was used for a brief time by the navy during World War I, served as a music academy, nurses hostel and again a hospital during World War II.   After the war it became the offices of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) before being absorbed into the construction of the County Court complex in the 1990s.
