While Bourke Street in Redfern and Darlinghurst is more known for terrace housing busy Bourke Street in Waterloo is mostly industrial. There is however a small section of late 19th Century workers cottages along the street in Waterloo with a handful of double storey houses. This house is one of the northernmost of this stretch, with industrial buildings directly to the north. The most suprising thing about this house is that it has been modernised really recently (within the last few years) with the fine patterned iron lacework removed completely in favour of horizontal timber slats.

Houses like this freestanding boom terrace style home are my personal favourites and Parkville is a place which abounds in such examples of high Victoriana. Unrendered and painted in mustard to simulate sandstone, this particular home was built in 1882 1 and retains many of its original features. Though it appears to currently be undergoing renovations, hopefully much of its character can be preserved.

Some 14 kilometres east of Melbourne’s CBD, close to Surrey Hills railway station can be found this rare and grand freestanding double storey terrace house named “Surreyford”.
This terrace was erected in 1889, a year after the railway to Lilydale was duplicated and it is one of a number of homes of this era built nearby although they are mostly single storey villas.

Rockdale is an attractive freestanding double storey former middle class home in the Italianate terrace style. Like many of the grand homes along this stretch of Punt Road close to St Kilda Junction it is set back from the street. Despite its obvious grandeur, Rockdale is unfortunately not afforded any heritage protection under the City of Stonnington planning scheme.
The terrace is highly decorated in rendered brick, however it has been significantly modified, the “modernisation” dating to sometime before the 1950s resulting in the removal of its cast iron lacework, replacement of its support column with concrete and enclosing its upper storey verandah in aluminium framed glass.

Standing as a lone freestanding suburban terrace house overlooking Lincoln Park in Essendon is this landmark Victorian home in the Australian filigree style.
The polychrome brick terrace has many classical features to indicate its Italiante style, while its overall composition is distinctively eclectic.
