Ray Villa and Harris Villa: 45-47 Waterloo Crescent, St Kilda
This exuberant semi-detached pair of Victorian Italianate villas, set back from the street, is one of two such pairs in close proximity (the other I will post at a future date). Disappointingly while other nearby properties do, neither of these pairs has any heritage status under the City of Port Phillip planning scheme.

This row of four typical Italianate double storey Melbourne terraces is situated in Parkville which is a small are with one of the most beautifully preserved stands of terraces in Australia. While the rendered terrace is more subdued than others in the area, there are still some subtle but interesting horizontality emphasised by the cornice and the linear friezes of the verandah and repetitive parapet which is relatively intact with its ball finials.

This flatly laid out Italianate row of four double storey terraced houses could almost be mistaken for a typical Melbourne terrace if not for the discrete attic dormer profiles projecting above the parapet. One interesting aspect of the layout is the end terrace at 115 has a noticeably narrower profile and very subtle and skilled modifications have been made to the design to adjust.

This row of three narrow single storey terraces has been in the news lately as it has narrowly escaped compulsory acquisition and demolition that is set to clear land for a new railway line as part of the Victorian Regional Rail Link while the same cannot be said for the row of three 1990s postmodern terrace houses at 96-100 on the adjacent site.

Rockdale is an attractive freestanding double storey former middle class home in the Italianate terrace style. Like many of the grand homes along this stretch of Punt Road close to St Kilda Junction it is set back from the street. Despite its obvious grandeur, Rockdale is unfortunately not afforded any heritage protection under the City of Stonnington planning scheme.
The terrace is highly decorated in rendered brick, however it has been significantly modified, the “modernisation” dating to sometime before the 1950s resulting in the removal of its cast iron lacework, replacement of its support column with concrete and enclosing its upper storey verandah in aluminium framed glass.
