Bodford Terrace: 21-27 Drummond Street, Carlton. Melbourne, Victoria

Bodford Terrace: 21-27 Drummond Street, Carlton. Melbourne, Victoria

Despite the name (along with the date of construction) appearing centrally on its parapet, confusion over the naming of this terrace parallels its sketchy history.  Today this row of four classic double storey Victorian houses is recognised by the name “Bodford Terrace”, however even during its early years it was also referred to as “Bedford Terrace”, perhaps a case of mistaken identity.  The origin of the name and its developer, most likely is obscure.  What is known is that it is among Carlton’s earliest terraces, erected in 1868, predating the 1880s boom, however since its initial construction it has gone through signficant stages of appreciation and neglect.

Terrace Houses: 86-88 Collins Street. Melbourne, Victoria

This impressive row of two triple storey terraces was once actually a row of three built for Dr Robert Martin in 1873 by James Gall (a third house in this row was demolished in 1976 to give the Nauru House office tower a Collins Street address). It is now one of just a handful of terraces remaining in the Melbourne CBD.  The terraces, originally a combination of consulting rooms and residence have been adaptively reused as offices with ground floor boutique retail.

These terrace houses, largely hidden by trees, are of a most unusual design.  Looking similar in appearance to a Manhattan brownstone, they feature an exaggerated Italianate mannerist (or baroque) style using stucco and mouldings to simulate heavy stone in stark contrast to the iron lacework inspired filigree terraces of the street.

Tucked in a narrow one-way Fitzroy lane, this wide freestanding boom style terrace is extremely exuberant example of the free classical style.  Of note is its specially cast iron lacework “opera box” style balcony and the multitude of male head busts which litter the party walls on either side, facing both forward and downward.
