This pair of unnamed red brick “blood & bandage” style Edwardian terraces in regional Bendigo is interesting, impressive and simple at the same time. The terrace is set back on the block on a steep hill overlooking the city on a street filled with terraces and villas. Although they are single storey, they have the commanding presence of a double storey terrace which is aided by the tall staircase ascending the retaining wall and the courtyard below. The stairs and halls run side-by-side toward the middle party wall.

This pair of two storey Victorian terrace is typical of the sort located near many railway stations in Melbourne. Located very close to the Victorian era Windsor railway station it is, however, unfortunately situated – wedged as it is between a large 1960s Telstra exchange and a block of 60s flats (which presumably at some stage removed other terraces like it from the streetscape) as well as obscured by a large paperbark tree and large powerlines.

Despite the efforts of multi-storey flats in recent years, the 1880s boom style terraces of Puteney House and St Frances House still dominate the streetscape between the Barkly Street and St Kilda Road junctions of Carlisle Street. The pair of white double storey “Melbourne style” or “Boom style” terraces form a small row with prominent classical parapets.
The parapets are dressed classical triangular pediments with blind balustrades and urns forming twin Palladian motifs over a decorative frieze of repeated swags in the style of elaborate Italianate villas. The terraces themselves are dressed in classical adornment with flat arched bay windows at the bases.
