Ray Villa and Harris Villa: 45-47 Waterloo Crescent, St Kilda. Melbourne, Victoria

Ray Villa and Harris Villa: 45-47 Waterloo Crescent, St Kilda

This exuberant semi-detached pair of Victorian Italianate villas, set back from the street, is one of two such pairs in close proximity (the other I will post at a future date).  Disappointingly while other nearby properties do, neither of these pairs has any heritage status under the City of Port Phillip planning scheme.

Fern House, Victoria House, Albert House and Park House: 67-73 Morrah Street, Parkville. Melbourne, Victoria

This row of four typical Italianate double storey Melbourne terraces is situated in Parkville which is a small are with one of the most beautifully preserved stands of terraces in Australia.  While the rendered terrace is more subdued than others in the area, there are still some subtle but interesting horizontality emphasised by the cornice and the linear friezes of the verandah and repetitive parapet which is relatively intact with its ball finials.

Terrace Houses: 15-23 Hurtle Square. Adelaide South, Australia

Another row of double storey terrace houses in Adelaide’s Hurtle Square, this time a row of four which I find interesting for its contrasting use of corrugated iron verandah roof forms of the end terraces. The verandah of the remodelled house at 23 Hurtle Square breaks the rhythm and adds interest through its concave roof, contrasting detail and colour scheme.

Rockdale: 96 Punt Road, Windsor. Melbourne, Victoria

Rockdale: 96 Punt Road, Windsor. Melbourne, Victoria

Rockdale is an attractive freestanding double storey former middle class home in the Italianate terrace style.  Like many of the grand homes along this stretch of Punt Road close to St Kilda Junction it is set back from the street.  Despite its obvious grandeur, Rockdale is unfortunately not afforded any heritage protection under the City of Stonnington planning scheme.

The terrace is highly decorated in rendered brick, however it has been significantly modified, the “modernisation” dating to sometime before the 1950s resulting in the removal of its cast iron lacework, replacement of its support column with concrete and enclosing its upper storey verandah in aluminium framed glass.

Saltaire: 8 Thorn Street. Essendon, Victoria

Standing as a lone freestanding suburban terrace house overlooking Lincoln Park in Essendon is this landmark Victorian home in the Australian filigree style.

The polychrome brick terrace has many classical features to indicate its Italiante style, while its overall composition is distinctively eclectic.
